Vancouver City on the s shore of Burrard Inlet, s British Columbia, Canada. It is Canada's third-largest city and principal Pacific port. The area was first explored (1792) by British Captain George Vancouver. The building of the Canadian Pacific Railway allowed it to grow into the largest city on Canada's w coast. Its excellent sea and air links make it one of North America's leading centres for transport and communication with countries of the Pacific Rim. Vancouver's beautiful harbour setting, pleasant climate, and terminus of both trans-Canadian railroads make it a magnet for tourists. The city has two universities: British Columbia (1908) and Simon Fraser University (1963). Industries: tourism, timber, oil refining, shipbuilding, fish-processing. Pop. (2001) 545,671 (metropolitan 1,986,965).
