Turgenev, Ivan Sergeievich

Turgenev, Ivan Sergeievich (1818–83) Russian novelist, playwright, and short-story writer. His novels often opposed social and political evils and attracted official disapproval. The play A Month in the Country (1855) is often considered the first psychological drama of the Russian theatre. After the appearance of Turgenev's masterpiece Fathers and Sons (1862), he left Russia permanently.
