Truth, Sojourner (1797–1883) US abolitionist. Born a slave in New York and unable to read or write, she was freed by the New York Emancipation Act (1827). Inspired by a religious calling, Truth became a leading propagandist for abolition of slavery and votes for women. The ‘micro-rover’ on NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission was named after her.
