Tamil Tigers Militant
Tamil group in Sri Lanka that seeks independence from the
Sinhalese majority. Located mainly in the
n and
e of the island, the 3 million Tamils are Hindus, unlike the Buddhist Sinhalese. From the 1980s, the Tamil Tigers waged a campaign of civil disobedience and terrorism. In 1986, autonomy for the Tamils was agreed by India and Sri Lanka, but no date was fixed. In 1987, the Indian Army was sent to restore order but withdrew in 1990, having failed to stop the violence.
