Suez Canal

Suez Canal Waterway in Egypt linking Port Said on the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea. The 169km (105mi) -long canal was planned and built (1859–69) by the Suez Canal Company under the supervision of French canal builder Ferdinand de Lesseps. In 1875, the British government became the major shareholder in the company. In 1955, more than 120 million tonnes of merchandise passed through the canal, much of it oil. In 1956, President Nasser of Egypt nationalized the canal. Israel, Britain, and France launched a disastrous attack on Egypt. The canal shut (1956–57) while repairs were carried out. It was again closed during the Six-Day War (1967). The canal reopened in 1975. In the intervening years, many new ships, especially oil tankers, had became too large to pass through the canal. Loss of revenue forced Egypt to clear and widen the waterway.
