Sondheim, Stephen
Sondheim, Stephen (1930– ) US composer and lyricist. Sondheim made his mark on Broadway in 1957 with the lyrics for Leonard
Bernstein' West Side Story. His first success as a lyricist-composer was
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962). Sondheim's reputation was enhanced by works such as
A Little Night Music (1972),
Sunday in the Park with George (1984), and
Assassins (1991).
