Social Democratic Labour Party

Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP) Political party in Northern Ireland that leans towards socialism. It favours eventual unification of the province with the Republic of Ireland. Founded in 1970, its leader (1983–2001) was civil rights' activist John Hume. Mark Durkan (1960– ) succeeded Hume as leader. The party seeks to use non-violent, constitutional methods to attain its goals.
