Shelley, Percy Bysshe
Shelley, Percy Bysshe (1792–1822) English poet. A committed atheist, Shelley was expelled (1811) from Oxford University for his beliefs. His radical pamphlets forced him into hiding in Wales, where he wrote
Queen Mab (1813).
Alastor (1816) reflects his political idealism. From 1818, he lived in Italy with his second wife, Mary
Shelley.
The Cenci (1819) is a five-act tragedy. The Peterloo Massacre (1819) prompted
The Mask of Anarchy.
Prometheus Unbound (1820), a four-act lyrical drama, is a masterpiece of
Romanticism.
Julian and Maddalo (1924) explores his friendship with Lord
Byron. Smaller poems include “Ode to the West Wind” (1819), and “To a Skylark” (1820). The death of John
Keats inspired
Adonais (1821). Shelley drowned in a boating accident.
