Shaka
Shaka (1787–1828) King of the
Zulu. He claimed the throne in
c.1816 and reorganized the Zulu, forming a powerful army and extending his control over all of what is now Kwazulu-Natal. He remained on good terms with the white government in the Cape, but his cruel and arbitrary rule provoked opposition at home and he was murdered by his half brothers.
