Senghor, Léopold Sédar
Senghor, Léopold Sédar (1906–2001) Senegalese statesman and poet. He was the first president (1960–80) of the republic of Senegal. As president, he led (1974) Senegal into the West African Economic Community. His poetry, such as
Songs of the Shade (1945), is intended for voice with musical accompaniment. Senghor was the first African to be elected to the Académie Française (1984).
