Schiller, Johann Christoph Friedrich von (1759–1805) German dramatist, historian, and philosopher. His early blank verse plays, such as
The Robbers (1781) and
Don Carlos (1787), are classics of the
Sturm und Drang period. Schiller's aesthetic and philosophical ideas were influenced by the
idealism of Kant. His masterpiece is the trilogy
Wallenstein (1800). Other historical plays include
Mary Stuart (1801),
Maid of Orleans (1801), and
William Tell (1804). Schiller's “Ode to Joy” forms the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
