Rushdie, (Ahmed) Salman
Rushdie, (Ahmed) Salman (1947– ) British novelist, b. India. His early works, including the Booker Prize-winning
Midnight's Children (1981), were eclipsed by
Satanic Verses (1988). This novel incited the condemnation of Islamic extremists who perceived the book as
blasphemy, and he was sentenced to death by Ayatollah
Khomeini of Iran. In hiding, he wrote a number of works, including a children's book,
Haroun and the Sea of Stories (1990), and the novel
The Moor's Last Sigh (1995). In 1998 the Iranian government revoked the death sentence and Rushdie returned to public life.
