Providence Capital of Rhode Island, USA, a port on Providence Bay in
ne Rhode Island. The city founded in 1636 as a refuge for religious dissenters from Massachusetts. It later enjoyed great prosperity through trade with the West Indies. The city played an active role in the American Revolution. Industries: jewellery, electrical equipment, silverware, machine tools, rubber goods. Pop. (2000) 173,618.
