Philip II
Philip II (1527–98) King of Spain (1556–98), King of Portugal (1580–98). In 1554, he married
Mary I of England. From his father, Emperor
Charles V, Philip inherited Milan, Naples, Sicily, the Netherlands and Spain with its empire in the New World. War with France ended at Cateau-Cambrésis (1559), but the Revolt of the Netherlands began in 1566. A defender of Roman Catholicism, Philip launched the unsuccessful
Armada of 1588 to crush the English who, as fellow Protestants, aided the Dutch.
