Shimon Peres
Peres, Shimon
Peres, Shimon (1923– ) Israeli statesman, prime minister (1986–88, 1995–96), b. Belarus. Elected to the Knesset in 1959, Peres was a founder (1968) of the Labour Party. He served in the cabinet under Golda
Meir, and became minister of defence under Yitzhak
Rabin. In 1977, he succeeded Rabin as leader of the Labour Party, and led Labour to a narrow victory in 1984 elections. Unable to form a government, Peres entered a power-sharing arrangement with Yitzhak
Shamir. In 1992, he lost the party leadership to Rabin, and subsequently served as foreign minister under him. Peres, Rabin and Yasir
Arafat shared the 1994 Nobel Prize for peace for their roles in the
Israeli-Palestinian Accord. Peres returned as prime minister after Rabin's assassination (1995), but was narrowly defeated in 1996 elections by Binyamin
Netanyahu and stood down as Labour leader in favour of Ehud
Barak. Peres served as minister of regional cooperation (1999–2001) under Barak and foreign minister (2001– ) under Ariel
Sharon.
