Nelson, Horatio, Viscount

Nelson, Horatio, Viscount (1758–1805) British admiral. Joining the navy aged 12, he was a captain at 20. Nelson lost an eye in action in 1794, and lost his right arm in 1797. Having played a notable part in the victory at Cape St Vincent (1797), he again used unorthodox tactics in the Battle of Abukir Bay in 1798. He was killed at the moment of his greatest victory, when he destroyed the French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar (1805). He is remembered for his courage and tactical ability, and for his love affair with Emma Hamilton.
