Nehru, Jawaharlal
Nehru, Jawaharlal (1889–1964) Indian statesman, prime minister of India (1947–64), father of Indira
Gandhi. Educated in England, he succeeded his father Motilal Nehru (1861–1931) as president of the
Congress Party in 1929. Nehru and ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi led nationalist opposition to British rule in India. Nehru was imprisoned nine times for non-cooperation with the British between 1921 and 1945. He played a leading role in the negotiations with
Mountbatten and
Jinnah that led to the independence of India and Pakistan. As the first prime minister of an independent India, Nehru followed a foreign policy of non-alignment in the Cold War and became a respected leader of the Third World.
