Monk, Thelonious Sphere
Monk, Thelonious Sphere (1917–82) US jazz pianist. Along with ‘Dizzy’
Gillespie and Charlie
Parker, Monk was a key figure in the development of
be-bop. In the early 1950s, he formed his own band, featuring John
Coltrane. His distinctive, idiosyncratic chord structures and dissonances brought humour to the idiom. His greatest compositions, such as “Round Midnight”, “Straight No Chaser”, “Epistrophy”, and “Crepuscule with Nellie” are jazz standards.
