Metaxas, Joannis

Metaxas, Joannis (1871–1941) Greek general and statesman, prime minister (1936–41). Metaxas fought in the Balkan Wars (1912–13), but was dismissed for pro-German leanings during World War I. As prime minister, Metaxas dissolved parliament and ruled as a virtual dictator. Despite fascist trappings, he led resistance to Mussolini's imperialism.
