Martí, José (1853–95) Cuban poet and essayist. His verse reflected his belief in the inseparability of poetry and politics. Martí was forced into exile and lived in New York before returning to Cuba, where he died fighting the Spanish. Many Latin Americans writers have been strongly influenced by his works. Ismaelillo (1882), Versos libres (published posthumously), and Versos sencillos (1891) contain his best poems.
