Marius, Gaius (
c.157–86 bc) Roman political and military leader. His policy of recruiting poor men without property contributed to the bond between Roman troops and their commanders. He also revised standard army training and equipment. His rivalry with
Sulla forced him out of Rome, but he raised an army and recaptured the city in 87 bc.
