Khmer
Khmer Language of
c.85% of the inhabitants of Cambodia. It belongs to a group of the
Mon-Khmer languages. A Khmer empire existed from the 9th to the 15th centuries
ad. Cambodia was renamed the Khmer Republic in 1970. When the Republic fell to the
Khmer Rouge in 1975, the country was renamed Kampuchea; the name Cambodia was restored in 1989.
