Keynes, John Maynard

Keynes, John Maynard (1883–1946) English economist. In The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money (1936), which was strongly influenced by the Great Depression, Keynes laid the foundation of modern macroeconomics. He advocated the active intervention of government in the economy to stimulate employment and prosperity. He was influential as an economic adviser in World War II, and took a leading role in the Bretton Woods Conference of 1944.
