Kepler, Johannes (1571–1630) German mathematician and astronomer. He supported the heliocentric theory put forward by Copernicus. Kepler succeeded Tycho Brahe as imperial mathematician to Emperor Rudolf II. From Brahe's observations, he concluded that Mars moves in an elliptical orbit, and he went on to establish his three laws of planetary motion: law one states that the orbit of a planet is an ellipse with the Sun at one of the foci; law two (law of areas) states that the line joining the planet to the Sun (radius vector) sweeps out equal areas in equal times; law 3 states that the square of the period of revolution (P) is directly proportional to the cube of the mean distance of the planet from the Sun. The Rudolphine Tables (1627), based on Brahe's observations and Kepler's laws, remained the most accurate until the 18th century.
