John III Sobieski
World Encyclopedia
John III Sobieski (1624–96) King of Poland (1674–96). His ambition led him to conspire with the French against Polish interests, but his successful generalship against the Ottoman Turks gained him the throne. John's greatest triumph was ending the siege of Vienna (1683) and liberating Hungary by defeating the Ottoman Turks. In Poland, his rule was frustrated by opposition and revolt.
