Hundred Years' War
Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) Sporadic conflict between France and England. In 1328,
Philip VI of France was crowned. In 1337, he captured Aquitaine, prompting King
Edward III of England to invade France. English victories at
Crécy (1346) and
Poitiers (1356) led to the Peace of Brétigny (1360), which ceded large territories to Edward. The accession of
Henry VI to the English throne revived French fortunes. In 1429, the siege of
Orléans was broken by
Joan of Arc. In 1453, the French captured Bordeaux, leaving only Calais in English hands (until 1558). See also
