Howard, John Winston

Howard, John Winston (1939– ) Australian statesman, prime minister (1996– ). Howard was elected to the House of Representatives in 1974. In 1982 he became deputy leader of the Liberal Party, and was made leader in 1985. He held many shadow cabinet positions, and in 1995 was appointed Leader of the Opposition. Howard led the Liberal-National coalition to victory against Paul Keating's ruling Labor Party government. He was re-elected in 1998 and 2001.
