Horthy, Miklós Nagybánai

Horthy, Miklós Nagybánai (1868–1957) Hungarian political leader, regent (1920–44). He commanded the Austro-Hungarian fleet in World War I. Horthy took part in the counter-revolution that overthrew Béla Kun, becoming regent and effective head of state. His highly conservative regime suppressed political opposition and resisted the return of Charles I. Allied with the Axis Powers in 1941, he tried to arrange a separate peace with the Allies in 1944 but was arrested by the Germans. After the war he settled in Portugal.
