Guatemala City

Guatemala City (Ciudad Guatemala) Capital of Guatemala, on a plateau in the Sierra Madre; largest city in Central America. Founded in 1776, the city was the capital of the Central American Federation from 1823–39. It was badly damaged by earthquakes in 1917–18 and 1976. Industries: mining, furniture, textiles, handicrafts. Pop. (2002) 942,348.
