Gestapo
Gestapo (
Geheime Staatspolizei) State secret-police of Nazi Germany. Founded in 1933 by
Goering, it became a powerful, national organization under
Himmler from 1934, as an arm of the
SS. With up to 50,000 members by 1945, the Gestapo and SS ran the
concentration camps.
