France, Anatole (1844–1924) (
Jacques Anatole François Thibault) French writer. He achieved recognition with the novels
The Crime of Sylvester Bonnard (1881) and
Thaïs (1890). He supported Emile
Zola during the
Dreyfus Affair, and his writing grew more political, such as the four-volume novel series
Contemporary History (1897–1901) and
Penguin Island (1908). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in literature.
