Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Province in se South Africa; the capital is East London. Eastern Cape was created in 1994 from the e part of the former Cape Province. It incorporates the former, apartheid-created homelands of Transkei and Ciskei. Area: 169,600sq km (65,466sq mi). Pop. (2000 est.) 6,978,387.
