Earth Summit
Earth Summit (June 1992) United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first serious global acknowledgement of the problems created by the impact of industrial society on the
environment. The Rio Declaration laid down principles of environmentally sound development, a ‘blueprint for action’, and imposed limits on the emission of gases, responsible for the
greenhouse effect. A second Earth Summit (June 1997) in New York, USA, called for practical progress in the reduction of
carbon dioxide emissions and strict enforcement of the Convention on Biodiversity. The European Union
(EU) pledged to cut CO
2 emissions to 15% below 1990 levels. The US only agreed to maintain its level of emissions. In August 2002, a third Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, raised the need for sustainable development programmes in Africa as a way of beating poverty and protecting the environment. See also
