Descartes, René
Descartes, René (1596–1650) French philosopher and mathematician. Often regarded as the father of modern philosophy. In 1619, he described an all-embracing science of the universe. His works include
Discourse on Method (1637),
Meditations on the First Philosophy (1641) and
Principles of Philosophy (1644). Descartes' methods of deduction and intuition inform modern metaphysics. By doubting all his ideas, he reached one indubitable proposition: “I am thinking”, and from this that he existed:
cogito ergo sum (“I think, therefore I am”). He also founded analytic geometry, introduced the
Cartesian coordinate system and helped establish the science of optics.
