Danton, Georges Jacques
Danton, Georges Jacques (1759–94) French politician and a leader of the
French Revolution. He played the role of moderator in the turbulent 1790s, seeking conciliation between the
Girondins and Montagnards. Briefly head of the
Jacobins in 1793 and a member of the Committee of Public Safety, he was arrested during the
Reign of Terror and guillotined.
