Dante Alighieri
Dante Alighieri (1265–1321) Italian poet. In his early years Dante wrote many
canzoni to Beatrice Portinari, who remained the inspiration for much of his life's work. In 1300, he became one of the rulers of Florence, but was exiled in 1302 after a feud between the White and Black
Guelphs. He never returned to Florence, but wrote under the patronage of various nobles until he died impoverished in Ravenna. His writings include
The New Life (
c.1293),
Banquet (
c.1304–07),
On Monarchy (
c.1313), and
De Vulgari Eloquentia (1304–07). His masterpiece,
The Divine Comedy, a three-book epic in
terza rima, represents one of the pinnacles of Western literature and places Dante among the greatest writers of all time.
