Cuvier, Georges, Baron

Cuvier, Georges, Baron (1769–1832) French geologist and zoologist, a founder of comparative anatomy and palaeontology. His scheme of classification stressed the form of organs and their correlation within the body. He applied this system of classification to fossils, and came to reject the theory of gradual evolution, favouring instead a theory of catastrophic changes.
