Curaçao

Curaçao Largest island of the Netherlands Antilles in the West Indies, in the s Caribbean Sea; the capital is Willemstad. Most inhabitants are descended from African slaves imported during the 17th and 18th centuries; the indigenous Arawak are now extinct. Curaçao derives most of its income from tourism and oil-refining. Products: groundnuts, tropical fruits, Curaçao liqueur, phosphates. Area: 444sq km (171sq mi). Pop. (1998 est.) 205,693.
