Córdoba

Córdoba (Cordova) City on the River Guadalquivir, Andalusia, s Spain; capital of Córdoba province. A flourishing centre of learning under Abd ar-Rahman III (first caliph of Córdoba), it was captured by Ferdinand III of Castile in 1236, who imposed Christian culture on the city. The Great Mosque (8th–10th century) is a world heritage site. Industries: tourism, coal and lead mining, engineering. Pop. (1998 est.) 309,961.
