Coolidge, (John) Calvin (1872–1933) Thirtieth US president (1923–29). Stern action in the Boston police strike of 1919 earned him the Republican nomination as vice president in 1920. He became president on the death of Warren Harding in 1923 and was re-elected in 1924. A conservative with no dramatic political programme, his administration was characterized by minimal government interference in business and commerce, summed up by his phrase, “the business of America is business”. He declined to stand for re-election in 1928.
