Catherine de' Medici
Catherine de' Medici (1519–89) Queen of France, wife of Henry II and daughter of Lorenzo de'
Medici. She exerted considerable political influence after her husband's and first son's deaths in 1559. In 1560 she became regent for her second son,
Charles IX, and remained principal adviser until his death (1574). Her initial tolerance of the
Huguenots turned to enmity at the beginning of the French Wars of
Religion. Her concern for preserving the power of the monarchy led to a dependence on the Catholic House of
Guise, whose growing power she failed to control. Fearing the decline of her power at court, due to the rise of the Huguenot leader Gaspard de Coligny, she planned the
Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572). When her third son,
Henry III, acceded in 1574, her effectiveness in policy-making had been compromised.
