Bourguiba, Habib ibn Ali (1903–2000) First president of Tunisia (1957–87). In 1934, Bourguiba founded the nationalist Neo-Destour Party. In 1954, he began negotiations that culminated in Tunisian independence (1956). He became prime minister and, after the abolition of the monarchy in 1957, was elected president. In 1975 he was proclaimed president-for-life. Bourguiba maintained a pro-French, autocratic rule until, old and ill, he was overthrown in a coup led by Ben Ali.
