Botticelli, Sandro
Botticelli, Sandro (1444–1510) (
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi) Florentine
Renaissance painter. Loved by the
Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and an important influence on
art nouveau, he was part of a late 15th-century movement which admired the ornamental, linear qualities of Gothic painting. Botticelli is best known for his mythological allegories,
Primavera (
c.1478),
The Birth of Venus and
Pallas and the Centaur. He was one of the privileged few to decorate the Sistine Chapel in Rome (1481) and, at the height of his career, was the most popular painter in Florence. He made a series of delicate pen drawings for a copy of Dante's
Divine Comedy. From 1500, his style was superseded by the inspired naturalism of
Leonardo da Vinci.
