Bering Sea Controversy Dispute between various nations (mainly the USA, Britain, and Canada) concerning control of the e Bering Sea and its lucrative seal-fur trade. After 1867 US hunters endangered the seal population of the region by overhunting. In 1881 US citizens demanded control of the entire region, seized British ships, and weakened Canadian commercial interests. In 1893, an international board of arbitration ruled in favour of the British. An agreement (1911) between Britain, Japan, Russia, and the USA limited hunting and made concessions to Canadian interests.
