Basque Country Region of the w Pyrenees in both Spain and France, consisting of the provinces of Alava, Guipúzcoa, and parts of Navarra and Vizcaya in Spain, and Basse-Navarre, Labourd and Soule in France. The main towns are Bilbao and San Sebastian. The region is populated by the Basques. It lost its autonomy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and separatist movements were formed in response.
