Ark of the Covenant
Ark of the Covenant In Jewish tradition, a gold-covered chest of acacia that contained the stone tablets on which the
Ten Commandments were inscribed. It rested in the Holy of Holies within the tabernacle. Only the high priest could look upon the Ark and no one could touch it. In Palestine, the Israelites set up a permanent resting place for the ark in Shiloh. In the 10th century
bc, the Ark was moved to the temple built by King
Solomon in Jerusalem. After the destruction of Solomon's temple in 586 bc, there is no further record of the Ark's location. In today's synagogues, the Ark of the Covenant is a closet or recess in which the sacred scrolls of the congregation are kept.
