Antarctica Fifth-largest continent (larger than Europe or Australasia), covering almost 10% of the world's total land area. Surrounding the South Pole, it is bordered by the Antarctic Ocean and the s sections of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Almost entirely within the Antarctic Circle, it is of great strategic and scientific interest. No people live here permanently, though scientists frequently stay for short periods to conduct research and exploration. Seven nations lay claim to sectors of it. Covered by an ice-sheet with an average thickness of c.1800m (5900ft), it contains c.90% of the world's ice and more than 70% of its freshwater.
