calcium(Ca) An element that is necessary for plant growth. In eukaryotic cells it is found mainly in the apoplast, where it preserves membrane integrity and strengthens cell walls. It protects roots against the effects of low pH, ion imbalance, and toxic ions, so that reduced root growth is a symptom of deficiency, as is ‘die-back’ of buds.
