echo-sounding A method for determining water depth by using the elapsed time (t) between the transmission of a pulse of high-frequency sound and the return of the echo from a reflector, e.g. the sea floor. Knowing the velocity of sound in water (Vw), the depth (h) to the reflector is given by h = Vwt/2.
