Sun The central star (G spectral type) in the
solar system, 696 000 km in diameter, 333 000 ×
Earth mass, 1 300 000 × Earth volume, and with a mean density of 1410 kg/m
3. The equator is inclined at 7.25° to the plane of the
ecliptic. It is principally composed of hydrogen and helium. The visible surface is the ‘photosphere’ (temperature 6000K). The Si-normalized solar abundances for the terrestrially non-gaseous elements match those of the C1
carbonaceous chondrites.
